Now I can separate you from me
and stand opposite of you and really see you
and let you see me
Now we stand face to face
and simply gaze into each other’s eyes until our eyes weep
Choreographer Artemis Lampiri presents her new work, “Apenanti/Across”, a duet exploring the concept of spatial relations as a defining condition between two bodies and the foundation of their every action.
What happens when two bodies stand across each other?
What does it truly mean to stand opposite?
At first glance, this stance evokes notions of confrontation. But aren’t we also across or opposite one another in an embrace or when we flirt?
In this work, the dancers’ bodies occupy opposing spaces, confronting one another, merging into unity, and then separating once more—continuously redefined through the gaze of the other.
The space is charged with interaction, gazes, silences, and the stage takes on its own temporality through a relatively minimalist approach. It resembles those moments when we look into each other’s eyes without speaking, and these times become timeless. The “Apenanti” flows like a breath from beginning to end, and the audience becomes a witness to the delicate and sensitive balance between connection, distance, and the separation of the two performers. One becomes a mirror for the other, distorted, and a deep relationship is built where, in the end, the audience will also find themselves opposite of them.
Drawing inspiration from traditional elements of folk dance, Leonardo da Vinci’s portrait paintings, and contemporary works like those of Marina Abramović, the choreographer investigates the distortion created when one’s perception is shaped by another. This mirror effect, born from our mutual gaze, shifts and transforms with the weight of our emotions.
CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE
The impetus for this work came from my need for separation within my own relationships. Coming from a merging family, the type of relationship I learned to create was always one of fusion. With the entrance into motherhood, this was intensified. Until, through personal processes, I understood and felt deeply that such a relationship is neither sustainable nor my true desire. I realized that when we tend to become one, I lose my sense of self, I lose what I need and desire in times. So, when I saw my second child sleeping for the first time opposite me and not on me, it became clear. How can I see you? How can I be with you and still exist as myself? This is how the idea of “Apenanti/across” was born. If we are not merged into one, I see you, I see myself, and I choose how I want to interact with you.

“…Their movement shifts between conflict and union, creating a choreography that captures the delicate balance between connection and distance.
The performance is minimalist, yet full of intensity and emotion. Without a single word, it manages to speak about our relationships with others, about the need to see and be seen, to stand opposite someone and recognize ourselves through the gaze of the other….
…A simple yet deeply moving piece—one that truly deserves to be experienced.”
