2022
The 2022 creation by choreographer Artemis Lampiri delves into the meaning of freedom as an experience that leaves its imprint on the body. Ten performers of various ages (17-58) narrate their personal stories of freedom through movement, negotiating on stage the boundaries between individual and collective liberty. They let their bodies speak for what they remember, have felt, have lived and recorded.
Experiences of repression and liberation become the core of the choreographic process and creation. How is freedom defined—not only historically and philosophically but also through our personal narratives and those of the performers, who are invited to coexist and shape a shared space through their differences? What shape, color, and forms does freedom take in our daily lives? Freedom is blue, with specks of purple and gold dust. It is calm, like the view of the horizon; it is found in coexistence, solitude, and even in fear. Freedom is born through struggle; it is a right. Freedom is an unhindered breath.
The creation process started out with research on the topic of freedom and repression and continued with over 40 interviews of people of different ages and backgrounds. Months later, the performers met with the choreographer at Thesseum Theatre for 10 consecutive days, 10 hours each day in order to create the performance but also get to know each other and form a well tuned group. One of the main goals was to relive the days of confinement and feel institutionalized, so that the performance would then be a cry for freedom and communication with the audience.
Amid a period of restricted individual freedoms, the choreographer addresses a pressing issue, creating together with the performers, and through improvisational practices, 10 distinct performances.
